Ice Crystals

Ice crystals on streamYet another sub-zero night left some interesting patterns of snow and ice crystals on this frozen stream next to the trail yesterday.  Today it is not so cold, but it has been snowing all morning, with more forecast for tonight.  I keep searching the ten-day forecast for some sign of Spring, but it doesn’t look too promising at the moment.  At least we have turned the page on the calendar and February is behind us.  Spring will come eventually, but it is hard to imagine it at the moment.Downy Woodpecker

Our bird feeder continues to do a brisk trade, and I finally managed to get a couple of good shots of a male Downy Woodpecker.  They are so quick they are usually gone before I can focus the camera on them, and all I end up with as a picture of the suet cake! 🙂

  1. I love the pretty patterns in the water. Hopefully you will soon see small signs of Spring. It has been such a mild Winter here, I think we have only had a couple of frosty nights – and it wasn’t hard frost. The rain has brought with it mild temps.

    • Winters in Michigan have always been colder and longer than those I remember in England, but this one has been the worst we have ever experienced, breaking all kinds of records for temperature and snowfall. No real sign of Spring yet, but soon I hope! 🙂

    • Thank you. I am always excited to see the woodpeckers. They are harder to attract than the Chickadees and Titmice.
