Summer Visitors

Baltimore Oriole, Male

Shortly after I put out the Hummingbird feeder, we were visited by a pair of Baltimore Orioles.  I quickly put out an orange for them, and now we are seeing two pairs.  They made short work of the oranges, and I have since switched to grape jelly, which they seem to love.  I place the container of jelly within a dish of water, to discourage ants, and it is working quite well.

Oriole, Female

They are a little shy, and it has been tricky to photograph them, but I have managed to get a few good shots.  They are definitely one of our most colorful birds.

Oriole, Male

Severe thunderstorms rolled through our area yesterday evening, but we were fortunate to dodge the worst of it.  The wind kicked up for a while and the sky looked very threatening, but the storm passed quickly and we only got a sprinkling of rain and a peal of distant thunder.

More storms are forecast for today, and after seeing what happened in Oklahoma yesterday, we will be keeping a wary eye on the sky.
