When it is time to get rid of the pumpkins and gourds I use for Fall decorations, I put them out by the manure pile and quite often we get one or two volunteer plants from them.
Our unusually wet summer produced a huge vine, which we have enjoyed watching through the season. Part of the fun is not knowing what the vine will produce. Will it be pumpkins or gourds? This plant actually seems to be producing both, including these fine specimens.
Because there is a good crop of stinging nettles growing in the area, we have not been able to see what other gifts this plant has for us. We will have to wait for a killing frost to investigate the whole plant. Who knows what surprises are hidden back there?
